Squirrels

Symptoms:

• Noises in the roof
• droppings found in the attic
• Pile of insulation formed in a corner of the loft
• Squirrels seen climbing onto house and enlarging a hole in soffit or fascia

Squirrels, while an appealing animal, are definitely not wanted inside an attic space. They can have two litters a year but the main one is always around February when those noises in the roof may be due to squirrels rather than rats.

Although not disease carrying like a rat, squirrels will gnaw wood and electric cables, urinate throughout the roof, smell badly and cause damage to the property in gnawing an entrance / exit hole.

There are a variety of traps for squirrels and only one approved poison may be used.

Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 it is an offence to release a squirrel once caught.

Squirrels are common visitors to bird tables, if these are positioned further down the garden away from the house itself then you have already reduced somewhat the possibility of them climbing upwards towards the loft.
